Standard Classification of Countries and Areas of Interest (SCCAI) 2016
Usage
Notes associated with particular country names are included in the Standard Classification of Countries and Areas of Interest (SCCAI) and its classification variant. Tables and other data presentations using this classification can either include the relevant notes or reference the classification's web page.
Data for countries and areas of interest are to be presented using the labels in the standard classification; however, additional labels can also be included to present imprecise responses that could not be coded to a particular classification version. The additional label should be presented with the term "not otherwise specified (n.o.s.)" and include a note of explanation. For example, in the case of responses of "Czechoslovakia", report "Czechoslovakia, n.o.s." with the following note:
"Czechoslovakia, not otherwise specified (n.o.s.) includes persons who report Czechoslovakia".
The names of the Current and Historical Countries and Areas of Interest as well as their associated country codes are available for reference.
Where data for two or more countries in the SCCAI are combined, the names of each country should be presented. For example, if the data for "Italy" and "Holy See (Vatican City State)" are combined in one entry in a table, the associated label should read "Italy and Holy See (Vatican City State)".
Where data for a country or area of interest are not shown as a separate entry, these data can be aggregated with data at the next level in the hierarchy in the classification variant Countries and Areas of Interest for Social Statistics - SCCAI. For example, when the population of British Virgin Islands is suppressed, it should be aggregated with Caribbean and Bermuda rather than with the United Kingdom. Entities that are suppressed can be noted in the data presentation.
It is strongly recommended that the note associated with the label "North America" always be used in the article or other data presentation if the countries and areas of interest included are not explicit.
The classification variant Countries and Areas of Interest for Social Statistics - SCCAI shows the groupings of countries and areas of interest for use in the presentation of social statistics data. Analytic articles as well as data created at the request of clients may use specialized groupings of countries that are not found in the classification variant. In such cases, the countries and areas of interest included in each grouping should be clearly specified within the article or the data documentation. The grouping labels in the classification variant should only be used to represent the countries and areas of interest for social statistics data as presented in the standard.
