Variant of NAICS 2012 - Content and media sector
This variant of NAICS is based on the OECD definition of the content and media sector as published in DSTI/ICCP/IIS(2006)2/FINAL, Working Party on Indicators for the Information Society, Information Economy - Sector Definitions Based on the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC), Rev.4.
The content and media sector is defined as comprising industries engaged in the production, publishing and/or the electronic distribution of content products.
The principle used for the identification of content or media products is as follows:
"Content corresponds to an organised message intended for human beings published in mass communication media and related media activities. The value of such a product to the consumer does not lie in its tangible qualities but in its information, educational, cultural or entertainment content."
Conformity to relevant internationally recognized standards
The content and media sector definition was originally developed by the OECD. The work was done in response to analytical needs for the information economy sector, arising from changes in the economies of industrialized nations. The OECD definition was expressed on the basis of the ISIC Rev.4. It was then converted to NAICS 2007. It is here updated to NAICS 2012.
