Classification of gender diversity status

Usage

Data for the Classification of gender diversity status is derived by cross-classifying the categories of the Classification of sex at birth (male and female) with the Classification of gender (man, woman and non-binary person). They are exclusively used to compare diverse groups of the population for statistical purposes, not to ascribe a gender identity to individuals.

Depending on the statistical program, the survey population may include children aged 14 or under. In such instances, the terms "boy" and "girl" are preferred to "man" and "woman".

Information on gender and sex at birth may be based on self-reported data or reported by proxy, depending on the statistical program. Therefore, the expressions "reported gender" and "reported sex at birth" are used in these definitions when referring to self-reported data and answers reported by proxy.

This classification supports the production and the publication of data on the gender diverse population, which includes transgender men and women, as well as non-binary persons. The gender diverse population may also be reported as the transgender and non-binary population.

When possible, data should be reported using the five-category gender diversity status classification (cisgender men, cisgender women, transgender men, transgender women, and non-binary persons). When data quality is limited or when reporting overarching findings, the two aggregate categories of the gender diversity status classification (cisgender people and gender diverse people) may be used.

When relevant, the non-binary population may also be analyzed by sex at birth. Based on their sex at birth, many non-binary individuals may have been raised as boys or girls, and some may have continued to live part of their adult lives as men or women. This may result in differences in lived experiences and life courses among non-binary individuals. In this context, they may be referred to as non-binary people whose sex at birth is female or whose sex at birth is male.
