Classification of age categories by five-year age groups

Usage

The five-year age groups can be collapsed to form larger categories to suit a particular data set or analytical purpose. The collapsed categories should be created by combining entire five-year age groups, respecting the category boundaries of this classification.

Where the population has a lower age limit, the first category should respect the category boundaries of the classification to the extent possible. For example, in health surveys where the population included is persons aged 12 years or over, the first category would be '12 to 14'. Surveys of the population aged 18 years or over would have '18 to 19' as the first category.
