Variant of NAICS 2007 - Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Sector, based on the 1998 OECD definition of the ICT Sector
Additional information
The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector is defined as a variant of NAICS industries. This sector comprises industries primarily engaged in producing goods or services, or supplying technologies, used to process, transmit or receive information.
The underlying principles involving the definition of this sector are:
For manufacturing industries, an industry's products must:
- be intended to fulfil the function of information processing and communication including transmission and display, or
- use electronic processing to detect, measure and/or record physical phenomena or to control a physical process.
For services industries, an industry's products must:
- be intended to enable the function of information processing and communication by electronic means.
Conformity to relevant international standards
The ICT sector definition was originally developed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The work was done in response to demands for a standard for monitoring ICT development, for making international comparisons, and for developing policies. The OECD definition was expressed on the basis of the International Standard Industrial Classification for all Economic Activities (ISIC Rev. 3). It was then converted to NAICS.
