Generation status of person

Status: This standard was approved as a departmental standard on January 11, 2016.

Definition

Generation status refers to whether or not the person or the person's parents were born in Canada.

Person refers to an individual and is the unit of analysis for most social statistics programs.

Derivation

'Generation status of person' is derived from responses to questions concerning the person's place of birth and the places of birth of their parents.

Conformity to relevant internationally recognized standards

The "Conference of European Statisticians Recommendations for the 2020 Censuses of Population and Housing", 2015 uses the expression "descendants of foreign-born". It notes that several generations of descendants can be distinguished but that population censuses generally focus only on persons whose parents were born abroad, often referred to as the 'second generation'. The definitions and much of the terminology presented here are compatible with those used in this standard.
