Definition

Subsidized housing refers to whether a renter household lives in a dwelling that is subsidized. Subsidized housing includes rent geared to income, social housing, public housing, government-assisted housing, non-profit housing, rent supplements and housing allowances.

Renter household refers to private households where no member of the household owns their dwelling. The dwelling is considered to be rented even if no cash rent is paid.

Usage

Subsidized housing is typically measured for the dwelling that is the household's usual place of residence. If an alternate place of residence is used, this should be specified in the data presentation.
