Number of years of other non-university education completed of person

Status: This standard was approved as a departmental standard on July 15, 1998.

Definition

Number of years of other non-university education completed refers to the number of academic years a person completed in a formal program provided an educational institution (other than an elementary or secondary school) which does not grant degrees.

An academic year would be equivalent to a school year or a grade in elementary and secondary institutions or an eight to nine month course of study in a post-secondary institution (for example, the equivalent of two out of three semesters in a trimester program).

Some sources may restrict collection to the population aged 15 and over. Other sources, particularly provincial administrative sources, may collect for other age groups, for example, the population aged four and over. The population covered should be clearly stated in the classification.

Person refers to an individual and is the unit of analysis for most social statistics programs.
