Establishments known as centrals, regionals, leagues and federations chartered or registered under federal or provincial legislation. Members of a provincial central are the local credit unions and co-operatives chartered or registered within that province. They receive and invest surplus funds from the member locals and act as lenders of last resort. They grant loans to their members. Regional centrals, where they exist, are owned by their member credit unions and co-operatives. The regional centrals in turn own the federation to which they belong, the federation being the central to the regionals. National centrals are owned by their provincial centrals and co-operative members.
