1 - Different-gender (cisgender) marriage or common-law union
This category includes persons who are living as part of a couple (married or common-law) in which members are cisgender and of different genders (one man and one woman).
Cisgender persons include those whose reported gender corresponds to their reported sex at birth.
2 - Same-gender (cisgender) marriage or common-law union
This category includes persons who are living as part of a couple (married or common-law) in which members are cisgender and of the same gender (two men or two women).
Cisgender persons include those whose reported gender corresponds to their reported sex at birth.
3 - Transgender or non-binary marriage or common-law union
This category includes persons who are living as part of a couple (married or common-law) in which at least one member is transgender or non-binary.
Transgender persons include those whose reported sex at birth does not correspond to their reported gender. They include transgender men and women. Non-binary persons are excluded.
Non-binary persons include those whose reported gender is not exclusively male or female.
