Introduction

Purpose

This survey collects data on domestic marine transport, that is vessels involved in the transport of domestic cargo between Canadian ports.

Confidentiality

Statistics Canada is prohibited by law from publishing any statistics which would divulge information obtained from this survey that relates to any identifiable business without the previous consent of that business. The data reported on this questionnaire will be treated in confidence,used for statistical purposes and published in aggregate form only. The confidentiality provisions of the Statistics Act are not affected by either the Access to Information Act or any other Legislation. To avoid duplication of data collection, Statistics Canada has entered into a data sharing agreement with Transport Canada and Canadian Coast Guard under section 12 of the Statistics Act. Transport Canada has the right to collect these data pursuant to the Canadian Transportation Act and the Carriers and Transportation Undertakings Information Regulations. Under section 12 of the Statistics Act, you may refuse to share your information with Canadian Coast Guard by writing to the Chief Statistician and returning your letter of objection along with the completed questionnaire. Coverage

Form S.4 should be completed by Towboat and Ferry Operators on a monthly basis, for each tug/barge cargo combination of fifteen net register tons or over. The form S.4 is limited to coastwise shipping services only. Canadian fishing vessels and naval vessels are exempted from this report. Specialized operations such as: drilling, ice breaking, oceanography or cartography are not to be included as they do not load or unload any type of commercial cargo. For the operation of a tugbarge/scow unit, a monthly S.4 is required for the barge/scow only. For the tug-log boom section units, a monthly report for the tug and cargo detail is required.

Reporting instructions

The report should be completed and forwarded within ten working days of the end of the month in question.

Record the registered name, the gross register tonnage, the net register
tonnage, and the country of registry of the barge/vessel.

5-6 Reporting Period:
Record the month and year to which the report refers.

7 Statistics Canada Use only

8-9 Port or Designated Area of Departure / Number of Trips:
Record the name of the port(s) or designated area(s) where the vessel departed during the reporting period. Indicate the number of times the vessel departed at each port or designated area.

11-12 Port or Designated Area of Arrival / Number of Trips:
Record the name of the port(s) or designated area(s) where the vessel arrived to unload cargo during the reporting period. Indicate the number of times cargo was unloaded at each port or designated area.

Record the name of the port(s) or designated area(s) where the cargo originated from during the reporting period

14 Description of Cargo:
Give an accurate, concise description of the goods unloaded. Give also an accurate description of the containerized goods and write "C" (for containerized) beside the cargo description. Enter one commodity per line.

15 Total Weight:
Record the net weight of cargo reported in field 14. DO NOT INCLUDE PACKAGING OR THE WEIGHT OF THE CONTAINER.

16 Unit of Measure:
Report the unit of measure used in field 15. Use metric tonnes (MT) (1000 kilos(KG)=1 metric tonne) whenever possible. If the weight cannot be given in tonnes, specify the weight in Short Tons (ST), Long Tons (LT), Pounds (LBS), Barrels (BBLS), Gallons (GAL), Board Feet (FBM), or Thousand Board Feet (MFBM).
