Introduction
Purpose
The monthly survey, Sawmills, measures quantities of lumber produced and shipped by Canadian manufacturers.
Additional information
The purpose of this survey is to obtain information on quantities of lumber produced and shipped, by Canadian manufacturers. Data collected by this survey provide an indicator of the economic condition of the producing industry, trends in the construction market and can serve as input to study market share and industry trends. Your information may also be used by Statistics Canada for other statistical or research purposes.
Authority
Collected under the authority of the Statistics Act, Revised Statutes of Canada, 1985, Chapter S19. Completion of this questionnaire is a legal requirement under this Act.
Confidentiality
Statistics Canada is prohibited by law from releasing any information it collects which could identify any person, business, or organization, unless consent has been given by the respondent or as permitted by the Statistics Act. Statistics Canada will use the information from this survey for statistical and research purposes.
Data-sharing agreements
To reduce respondent burden, Statistics Canada has entered into data-sharing agreements with provincial and territorial statistical agencies and other government organizations, which have agreed to keep the data confidential and use them only for statistical purposes. The details of these agreements as well as information on record linkages were provided to you in the form of a letter with the January mail out. Instructions
A. Production and Stocks of lumber:
Production - Report all lumber sawn in your mill, during the month. (Exclude re-sawing and lumber purchased or custom sawn for you by others.)
Stocks - Report all lumber held on the first and last day of the month, whether owned by your company or held for others.
Note: For species selection follow Standard Grading rules for Canadian lumber.
B. Receipts of lumber:
Purchases - Report all lumber purchased during the month.
Transfers In - Report all receipts, during the month, of lumber sawn for you by others from logs owned by you (custom sawn for you) and include lumber transferred to your mill from other sawmills of your own company.
C. Disposition of lumber:
(1) Shipments - Report all shipments, during the month, of lumber sold by your mill including shipments on consignment. Report also lumber owned by your mill and transferred to others for further processing on a custom basis (e.g. planing, kiln drying, etc.) and subsequent shipments.
(2) Transfers Out - Report transfers, during the month, of lumber custom sawn by your mill for others and include lumber transferred from your mill to other sawmills of your own company.
(3) Waste and other losses
