Description

The Canadian Tourism Activity Tracker is a visualization tool that uses relevant and timely alternate data to track the status of tourism in Canada. The domestic tracker demonstrates the contribution of Canadians to tourism in Canada and the inbound tracker demonstrates the contribution of non-Canadians to tourism in Canada. A combined tracker is also produced to demonstrate the overall status of tourism in Canada.

Data sources

Data are collected from other Statistics Canada surveys and/or other sources.

The Canadian Tourism Activity Tracker integrates data from several sources to create a comprehensive picture of tourism activity in Canada in reference to a base period.

The available alternate data covers many aspects of tourism, such as hotel occupancy, aviation statistics, spending and frontier counts. The trackers can evolve over time as new alternate data sources related to tourism become available.

Estimation

To prepare the alternate data for a given geography, the monthly raw data from each alternate data source are used to compute the relative difference of a given month to the same month in 2019, which was the most recent complete normal travel year. This ensures that the data being combined into the trackers are all on the same level. A relative difference of 0 would indicate that there was no change in the value of the given alternate data compared to the same month in 2019.

To produce the domestic and inbound trackers for a given geography, the relative differences from the relevant alternate data sources for each month are combined into a weighted monthly value. Alternate data sources that demonstrate a higher association with the concepts of tourism are given larger weights and therefore have more influence on the final values in the trackers.

To produce the combined tracker for a given geography, the weighted average of the domestic and inbound trackers are calculated for each month. For this combination step, the weights are based on the relative contribution of Canadians and non-Canadians to tourism in Canada, as determined from the 2019 National Travel Survey and the 2019 Visitor Travel Survey.
