Data sources and methodology

Instrument design

The survey has been designed to obtain data on productivity and shipments of selected items relating to the industry. The questionnaire has been designed to facilitate the reporting of the data on a quality and timely basis by the respondents and also to facilitate the rapid accumulation of the data upon receipt of all the questionnaires. Follow-up procedures are conducted mainly by telephone approximately two weeks following the reference period and are normally carried out with the company official responsible for the completion of the form. A request to obtain the data over the telephone is put forward to the official and is usually successful thus eliminating the time loss awaiting the report by mail. Having the use of direct telephone lines to most cities enhances greatly the ease and success rate of the follow-up of the outstanding survey reports resulting in the statistics being available to the users on a timely basis.
