Data sources and methodology
Sampling
This is a sample survey with a cross-sectional design.
The jobs chosen as models to establish prices should be representative in order to reflect price movement for the main class of work.
Data sources
Responding to this survey is voluntary.
Data are collected directly from survey respondents.
Respondent companies are visited every two years in order to establish and maintain a good rapport with our company contacts and to ensure obtaining reliable information. Staff conducting surveys are specially qualified and trained to elicit proper response from reporters.
Error detection
The figures of the most recently published indexes are subject to revision but all other figures are final.
Quality evaluation
Prices are contractors' selling prices for field installed goods, collected each quarter from members of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC). They are responsible for about 80% of the structural steel installed in Canada. Each member company selects a typical project that they have built and reprices this model through time. When models become obsolete they are replaced with current ones. Reference paper published April 1976.
Disclosure control
Statistics Canada is prohibited by law from releasing any information it collects that could identify any person, business, or organization, unless consent has been given by the respondent or as permitted by the Statistics Act. Various confidentiality rules are applied to all data that are released or published to prevent the publication or disclosure of any information deemed confidential. If necessary, data are suppressed to prevent direct or residual disclosure of identifiable data.
