Data sources and methodology

This is a sample survey with a cross-sectional design.

The jobs chosen as models to establish prices should be representative in order to reflect price movement for the main class of work.

Data sources

Responding to this survey is voluntary.

Data are collected directly from survey respondents.

Respondent companies are visited every two years in order to establish and maintain a good rapport with our company contacts and to ensure obtaining reliable information. Staff conducting surveys are specially qualified and trained to elicit proper response from reporters.

Error detection

The figures of the most recently published indexes are subject to revision but all other figures are final.

Quality evaluation

Many of the companies in this survey are classified to the manufacturing industry (3542) due to the large amount of in-plant work. However, the field erection element and the final location of the product make these commodities similar to many others produced by the construction industry and as such they are included here. Respondents estimate prices that they would currently submit on the market for a selected precast concrete project. This could be either architectural or structural precast pre-stressed concrete with normal reinforcement. These prices include costs for materials, labour, formwork, casting, transportation to the job site, site erection, federal and provincial sales taxes, overhead and profit. The regional weights of the manufacturing establishments are derived from the census of manufacturing values of output in the period 1985 to 1986, converted to 1986 price levels. The commodity weights are based on the values of output in the period 1980 to 1982, converted to 1986 price levels.
