Description

This survey provides data on the generating capability and peak load of the electric power sector.

The information is used by the Investment and Capital Stock Division of Statistics Canada. Federal (National Energy Board), provincial agencies and the Canadian Electricity Association are provided with data in a regular basis.

Reference period: Calendar year

Collection period: Data are collected within 5 months after the reference year.

Data sources and methodology

Target population

The universe consists of generators of electricity and/or those who have imports, exports or interprovincial transactions in electricity. The frame is derived from the Electricity Supply and Disposition Quarterly (Survey ID 2194).

Sampling

This survey is a census with a cross-sectional design.

Data sources

Responding to this survey is mandatory.

Data are collected directly from survey respondents.

The data is collected by Head Office through a mail-out /mail-back process. Follow-ups are conducted by phone or fax as needed to reach the target response rate.

The survey is completed by the electric utility that is responsible for most of the generation, transmission and distribution in the province or territory. In those provinces without clear dominance, information from the Electricity Supply and Disposition Quarterly (Survey ID 2194) is used to select the appropriate respondent for the province.

Disclosure control

Statistics Canada is prohibited by law from releasing any information it collects which could identify any person, business, or organization, unless consent has been given by the respondent or as permitted by the Statistics Act. Various confidentiality rules are applied to all data that are released or published to prevent the publication or disclosure of any information deemed confidential. If necessary, data are suppressed to prevent direct or residual disclosure of identifiable data.

Confidentiality analysis includes the detection of possible direct disclosure, which occurs when the value in a tabulation cell is composed of a few respondents or when the cell is dominated by a few companies.
