Description

The objective of this survey is to obtain information on the stocks of frozen eggs, poultry meats and edible dried egg products in storage and in cold storage. This survey is conducted under a joint agreement to collect and share information with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Data from this survey provide processors, retailers, producers, marketing boards, farm organizations and governments with monthly inventories at the provincial level. This information is used to make production, pricing and import decisions and to provide research information for market analysis.

This survey is unique because it is a joint survey conducted in cooperation with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Statistics Canada mails the questionnaires out and they are returned to the appropriate Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Regional Office for data capture. Non responses are followed up by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada by telephone or in some cases the establishment is visited. Both organizations release the results to the public.

Reference period: The first day of every month

Collection period: The inventory shall be taken and mailed promptly at the opening of business on the first working day of each month.

Data sources and methodology

The universe includes all public cold storage warehouses in Canada that store poultry products, as well as warehouses in Canada that store dry edible egg products.

Instrument design

This questionnaires were developed by Statistics Canada in consultation with the poultry industry and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

Data sources

Responding to this survey is mandatory.

Data are collected directly from survey respondents.

The collection period is the first two weeks of every month. Statistics Canada mails the inventory statements on the 15th day of each month and respondents are asked to complete the questionnaire on the first business day of the following month before faxing them in or returning them by mail to the appropriate Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Regional Offices.

This is a census survey with questionnaires mailed to 122 facilities licensed by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to store frozen poultry products. Questionnaires are also mailed to approximately 120 facilities licensed by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to store edible dried egg products.

The mail out is done by Agriculture Division, Statistics Canada and follow-up is carried out via telephone by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada officials in Regional Offices. Data are compiled in the Regional Offices and forwarded to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada officials in Ottawa. Totals are forwarded to the Agriculture Division of Statistics Canada.

Error detection

Both monthly reports and provincial totals are scrutinized to ensure that they are consistent with previous periods and industry trends.

Imputation

Imputation is applied to missing records manually. This is required if the current month's data are not available and are usually updated with completed questionnaires the following month. Possible imputation methods are based on historical reports or data, month-to-month trends, year-to-year trends, annual data, etc.

Estimation

This methodology type does not apply to this statistical program.

Quality evaluation

The survey results are evaluated through comparisons to previous estimates and other sources when available. Biological factors and industry limitations are used as a guide when evaluating the data or comparing to other data sets.

Disclosure control

Statistics Canada is prohibited by law from releasing any information it collects which could identify any person, business, or organization, unless consent has been given by the respondent or as permitted by the Statistics Act. Various confidentiality rules are applied to all data that are released or published to prevent the publication or disclosure of any information deemed confidential. If necessary, data are suppressed to prevent direct or residual disclosure of identifiable data.

Data accuracy

As this is a small census style survey with rigorous follow-up as required, data quality is deemed to be very high. In the case of a late report, telephone follow-up results in a high response rate. If the data cannot be obtained, estimates are made, and the data are revised the following month.

The quality of this survey is very good as the preliminary estimate compared to the final is usually within 5%.

The data accuracy of this survey is high, as the response rate is normally over 90%.
