Informatics professional services price indexes (IPSPI)
Summary of changes
Activity on this program started: 1993
Reference period of change - 2016
Survey redesign - updated base period (2015=100), sample and survey methodology. With the release of the 2016 reference year (which includes new data for 2015), the Informatics Professional Services Price Indexes have undergone a redesign with significant changes. First, they will no longer be categorized by the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), and are now based on the North American Product Classification System (NAPCS) 2017. As a result, four index estimates are now produced based on service categories corresponding to the NAPCS. Second, the price index for internet publishing and broadcasting, and web search portals is now discontinued, while a new price index for custom software design and development services is now available. Finally, a new pricing method based on charge out rates billed to clients is being used in the calculation of these new price indexes.

Data sources - In an attempt to alleviate response burden and survey costs, especially for smaller businesses, the IPSPI has reduced the number of simple establishments in the sample that are surveyed directly and instead derives financial data for these establishments from Corporate Income Tax (T2) files.

Starting in 2008, the Informatics Professional Services Price Index has a new reference year (2008=100) and is not comparable with the 2007 and earlier price indexes.
Target population - Starting with the reference year 2008, one industry category was added to the survey population: Internet Publishing and Broadcasting, and Web Search Portals (NAICS 519130).
