Land cover and land use refers to a description of the physical nature of the land's surface (urban built-up areas or mature forest for example) and a description of the use of land for commercial, non-commercial and ecological purposes.

Geographic area refers to areas whose boundaries are specifically delimited in accordance with well-defined concepts and which, in total, cover the entire landmass of Canada. It excludes Canadian territorial enclaves abroad.
