Major depressive episode of person, status

Major depressive episode refers to whether or not, in some specified period, the person classified as meeting the criteria for having a major depressive episode. A major depressive episode requires at least one episode of 2 weeks or more with persistent depressed mood and loss of interest or pleasure in normal activities, accompanied by problems such as decreased energy, changes in sleep and appetite, impaired concentration and feelings of guilt, hopelessness, or suicidal thoughts. Whether or not the person met the criteria was determined by a modified World Health Organization Composite International Diagnostic Interview (WHO-CIDI). Mental conditions or problems were identified through a set of questions pertaining to the feelings, the symptoms, severity, the intensity and the impact relative to each of the disorders.

Person refers to an individual and is the unit of analysis for most social statistics programs.
