Protection management of conserved area, category
Protection management refers to the type of agency, organization, individual or group that manages conserved areas including protected areas and other effective conservation measures. These are categorized as Federal management, Provincial or territorial management, Municipal management, Indigenous management and other management.
Conserved areas refers to areas that benefit from some protection, namely legal protections that meet International Union for Conservation of Nature definitions of a protected area and other effective conservation measures (OECMs). Protected areas include national, provincial and territorial parks; Indigenous protected areas; national wildlife areas; migratory bird sanctuaries; and marine protected areas. OECMs apply to areas that do not meet the formal definition of protected area but that are managed in a way that conserves biodiversity over the long term. These areas can include Indigenous territories; watersheds, resource management areas or marine refuges; and areas with restricted access, such as those used by the military.
