Variant of NAICS 2002 - Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Sector

Additional information

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Sector is defined as a variant of NAICS industries. This sector comprises industries primarily engaged in producing goods or services, or supplying technologies, used to process, transmit or receive information.

The underlying principles involving the definition of this sector are:

For manufacturing industries, an industry's products must:

- Be intended to fulfil the function of information processing and communication including transmission and display; or

- Use electronic processing to detect, measure and/or record physical phenomena or to control a physical process.

For services industries, an industry's products must:

- Be intended to enable the function of information processing and communication by electronic means.

Conformity to relevant international standards

The ICT Sector definition was originally developed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The work was done in response to demands for a standard for monitoring ICT development, for making international comparisons, and for developing policies. The OECD definition was based on the International Standard Industrial Classification for all Economic Activities (ISIC Rev3). It has now been converted to NAICS.
