Variant of CIP 2016 - STEM and BHASE groupings

Additional information

This variant can be used to analyse and compare the fields of study individually within STEM and BHASE groupings. It can also be used to compare education and labour market outcomes between STEM and BHASE fields of study. The STEM fields of study include science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The BHASE fields of study encompass business, humanities, health, arts, social science, education, as well as legal studies, trades, services, natural resources and conservation. The groupings in the variant are based on field of study, and are independent of level of study.

The first level of the variant consists of two groupings, STEM and BHASE fields of study. At the second level, the STEM grouping is disaggregated into three sub-groupings, and the BHASE grouping is disaggregated into seven sub-groupings. At the third level, the STEM grouping is further broken out into seven categories, and the BHASE grouping is further broken out into eighteen categories. The fourth level of the variant consists of the CIP 2016 instructional program classes.

With the removal of the 2011 variant's 'Technology, except engineering technology' sub-grouping, fields of study in this category were redistributed among the three 2016 STEM sub-groupings 'Science and science technology,' 'Engineering and engineering technology,' and 'Mathematics and computer and information science'. Another change in the 2016 variant is the introduction of sub-groupings within the BHASE grouping. Lastly, additional modifications made are:
