Variant of North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) 2022 Version 1.0 for Goods and services producing industries

Additional information

This variant divides the economy into only two industry groupings: the goods-producing industries and the services-producing industries in order to meet the needs for data produced on that basis.

All 20 NAICS sectors are accounted for in this variant. Five sectors of the economy are regrouped to form a largely goods-producing industry grouping (NAICS 11 to 31-33) and the remaining fifteen to form a largely services-producing industry grouping (NAICS 41 to 91).

Goods-producing industries are primarily associated with the production of goods (e.g., growing of crops, generation of electricity, the manufacturing of computers); however, these sectors may also produce some services (e.g., forest conservation, printing, wood treatment, machine shop services).

Services-producing industries are primarily associated with the production of services (e.g., sale of goods, provision of personal services); however, these sectors may also produce some goods (e.g., baked goods).
