List of ethnic or cultural origins 2021

Usage

The List of ethnic or cultural origins 2021 shows the groupings of origins for use in the presentation of census data. Other surveys, as well as analytic articles and data created at the request of clients, may use specialized groupings of origins that are not found in the list. In such cases, the origins included in each grouping should be clearly specified within the data documentation or the article. The grouping labels in the list should only be used to represent the origins as presented in the standard.

In cases where data for an ethnic or cultural origin need to be suppressed due to data quality or other considerations, these data should be aggregated into the respective 'not included elsewhere' (n.i.e.) category at the same level of the hierarchy in the list. For example, if the category 'Cornish' needs to be suppressed, it should be aggregated into the category 'British Isles origins, n.i.e.'

Alternatively, users may choose to not group origins using subtotals, and simply disseminate the detailed origin categories for which there are sufficient counts. In this case, any ethnic or cultural origin that is not shown as a separate entry should be aggregated into a residual category 'Other ethnic and cultural origins.'
