Variant of NAICS 2012 - Information and communication technology (ICT) sector

Additional information

The information and communication technology (ICT) sector is defined as a variant of NAICS. This sector comprises industries primarily engaged in producing goods or services, or supplying technologies, used to process, transmit or receive information.

The underlying principles involving the definition of this sector are as follows.

For manufacturing industries, an industry's products must be intended to fulfil the function of information processing and communication by electronic means including transmission and display.

For services industries, an industry's products must be intended to enable the function of information processing and communication by electronic means.

Conformity to relevant international standards

The ICT sector definition was originally developed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The work was done in response to demands for a standard for monitoring ICT development, for making international comparisons, and for developing policies. The OECD definition was expressed on the basis of the International Standard Industrial Classification for all Economic Activities (ISIC Rev. 4). It was then converted to NAICS 2007. It is here updated to NAICS 2012.
