Subject: Error corrected in Caregiving and Care Receiving 2 – modified caregiver/care recipient relationship variables

Product(s) affected: All microdata files (Master, Share, CLSA Share, Master Cognition, Share Cognition, CLSA Share Cognition micro-data files and the Public Use Microdata File (PUMF)

Year(s) affected: 2008–2009

Description of the problem(s):

Four variables used for describing the relationships between caregivers and care recipients were occasionally erroneously coded to relationships that were not plausible based on the demographic information about the caregivers and their care recipients; for example, a caregiver is identified as a parent of a care recipient but the caregiver is younger than a care recipient. These errors occurred for one of two reasons: 1) a processing error after data collection or 2) the interviewer or respondent misinterpreted the question during collection.

Variables affected:
CAG_06A and CAGDRMC in the Caregiving module (CAG) and CR2_15 and CR2DRMC in the Care receiving 2 (CR2) module on the Master and Share files. Derived variables CAGG06A and CR2G15 on the Public Use Microdata file are also affected.

Suggested correction(s):

For the Master, Share, CLSA Share, Master Cognition, Share Cognition, CLSA Share Cognition micro-data files:
For relationship inconsistencies that resulted from processing errors, corrections have been made to the data processing programs to reflect the correct code. For collection errors, the inconsistent relationships were re-coded to “Not Stated”.

Errata “patch” files are available and should be merged with the existing data files if any of the four variables are being used in analysis. There is a separate patch available for each data product.

For the Public Use Micro-data File (PUMF):
The data file has been corrected and a new version will be made available to data users.

Subject: Variable missing from linkage ID files

Product(s) affected: Linkage identification files

Year(s) affected: 2008–2009

Description of the problem(s):

A variable that is used in data linkage was erroneously left off of the final layout of the linkage identification files. This variable is called ADM_Q02A in the survey questionnaire and is re-named for external use as LNK_HNP. This variable contains the province or territory of a respondent’s health number if the respondent does not have a health number in the province where the respondent was interviewed. The layout has been corrected and the files re-generated with the added variable.
Note:  linkage identification files are issued upon request only, and only to provincial ministries of health and in Quebec, l’Institut de la Statistique du Québec.

Suggested correction(s):

Linkage identification files are issued upon request only, and only to provincial ministries of health and in Quebec, l’Institut de la Statistique du Québec. Any jurisdiction which has received a linkage ID file should contact Statistics Canada to receive a replacement file and file layout.

Subject: Error in the approximate sampling variability tables for the CCHS – Healthy Aging Public Use Microdata File (PUMF)

Product(s) affected: CCHS – Healthy Aging Public Use Microdata File (PUMF)

Year(s) affected: 2008–2009

Description of the problem(s):
The design effect values used to produce the approximate sampling variability tables at the provincial level were incorrect. The design effects used to produce the original set of tables were underestimated, resulting in coefficients of variation estimated from the tables being too low. A new set of tables have been produced. This problem only affects the provincial tables. The Canada level and Canada by age group tables remain unchanged.

Suggested correction(s):

Coefficients of variation for provincial estimates derived using the previous set of tables should be updated using the new tables. This only applies to provincial estimates.  PUMF users should contact Statistics Canada to obtain the corrected CV tables.
