Couple family with children

Definition

Couple family with children refers to a census family that contains a married couple or a couple living common law and at least one child. A couple may be of opposite or same sex. Children may be children by birth, marriage or adoption regardless of their age or marital status as long as they live in the dwelling and do not have their own spouse or child living in the dwelling.

    The previous standard made no reference to children being children by common-law unions. In this standard, common law unions have been added to the ways in which children can be associated to the couple family. In addition, a child having their own partner living in the dwelling has been added to the ways in which children are excluded from this statistical unit.
