Estimate

Definition

Estimate refers to the value assigned to characteristics of a population of units being studied. The values assigned are calculated using different procedures depending on the coverage and origin of the source data used as input to the estimation process. The source data may cover the whole population or only a sample of the population; in the latter case, there are various methods for selecting the units to be part of the sample. As for the origin of the source data, they may i) be collected through questionnaires, ii) be extracted from administrative files that various organizations generate for fulfilling their mandate and not for statistical purposes, iii) consist of estimates imported from other statistical programs, iv) taken from public documents or media, or v) origin from any combination of the aforementioned possibilities.
