Conformity to relevant internationally recognized standards

This standard is compatible with the recommendations for censuses contained in the United Nations "Principles and Recommendations for Population and Housing Censuses, Revision 3", 2017, which define 'collective living quarters' as being "intended for habitation by large groups of individuals or several households." The recommendations goes on to state "Such quarters usually have certain common facilities, such as cooking and toilet installations, baths, lounge rooms or dormitories, which are shared by the occupants."

The UN provides four upper level categories for grouping collective dwellings: hotels, rooming houses and other lodgings; institutions; camps; other; along with relevant subcategories. This standard also subdivides groupings for collective dwellings and, in accordance with recommendations in the UN Principles, includes additional categories required "for an improved appraisal of housing conditions."

This standard is also compatible with the "Conference of European Statisticians Recommendations for the 2020 Censuses of Population and Housing", 2015, which defines 'collective living dwellings' as "premises designed for habitation by large groups of individuals or several households."
