1. - General civil cases

A general civil case is any civil action that is not a family-related action, such as bankruptcy, probate matters and other claims involving money.

1.1 - Bankruptcy

Bankruptcy refers to proceedings initiated either by an insolvent individual or business (voluntary bankruptcy) or by creditors (involuntary bankruptcy) seeking to either have the debtor's remaining assets distributed among the creditors or to restructure debt.

1.2 - Collection

Collection refers to contract cases dealing with collection matters.

1.3 - Other contract

Other contract includes: landlord/tenant, employment, mortgage foreclosure, lien, other contract (contract cases not specifically listed) and unknown contract (contract cases where the details are unknown).

1.4 - Motor vehicle

Motor vehicle refers to tort actions concerning injury (personal or property) caused by a motor vehicle.

1.5 - Other tort

Other tort includes: malpractice, defamation, negligence, other tort and unknown tort.

1.6 - Probate

Probate refers to cases involving the administration and distribution of the estates of deceased persons (whether they left a will or died intestate). In Ontario, the figures reported under probate matters include contested estate matters only.

1.7 - Other civil action type

Other civil includes: administrative law, enforcement, adult protection/committeeship, civil protection, constitutional/charter, and other civil, which includes all general civil action types in a jurisdiction that do not fit into the categories specifically collected by the survey. It is the "other civil" category that makes up the majority of this count.

1.8 - Unknown type of action

Unknown includes all other civil actions (excluding family) not specifically identified.
