Classification of highest educational attainment

1 - Less than secondary (high) school graduation (highest)

This category includes persons with no schooling and persons who received some schooling but did not obtain a secondary school (high school) diploma or equivalency certificate. Persons who received education that could be counted towards a postsecondary certificate, diploma or degree are excluded from this category.

1.2 - Some secondary education (highest)

This category includes persons who completed at least grade 9 and have not received a secondary school (high school) equivalency certificate or diploma. In Quebec this includes persons who completed at least Secondary III and have not received a secondary school equivalency certificate or diploma. Persons who received education that could be counted toward a postsecondary certificate, diploma or degree are excluded from this category.

1.2.1 - Grades 9-10, or equivalent (highest)

This category includes persons who completed grade 9 or 10 but, did not complete any higher grades. In Quebec this includes persons who completed Secondary III or IV but did not complete any further secondary education. Persons who received a secondary school (high school) equivalency certificate or diploma are excluded from this category. Persons who received education that could be counted toward a postsecondary certificate, diploma or degree are also excluded from this category.

1.2.2 - More than grade 10 without secondary school completion, or equivalent (highest)

This category includes persons who had more than grade 10 education and did not complete secondary school or receive a secondary school (high school) equivalency certificate or diploma. In Quebec this includes persons who completed Secondary IV and did not complete secondary school or receive a secondary school equivalency certificate or diploma. Persons who received education that could be counted toward a postsecondary certificate, diploma or degree are excluded from this category.
