61. - Medical residency/fellowship programs
This series comprises residency and fellowship programs that prepare physicians (MD), osteopathic physicians (DO), and podiatrists (DPM) for certification as practitioners of recognized medical specialties. These programs are approved and accredited by designated professional associations and require from one to seven years to complete, depending on the program. Residency or fellowship programs that also result in the completion of an academic degree (e.g., MS, MSc, PhD), should be reported under one of the clinical sciences codes located in Series 26. Biological and biomedical sciences or in subseries 51.14 Medical clinical sciences/graduate medical studies, rather than in a residency code located in Series 61.

This subseries comprises instructional program classes 61.2701 to 61.2799.
61.2701 - General surgery residency programs
This instructional program class comprises any residency training program that prepares physicians in the care and treatment of diseases and disorders via invasive procedures and the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of physical disorders. These programs include instruction in clinical and operative skills, pre-operative and postoperative care, trauma management and endoscopic techniques.

These programs include instruction in diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy. Requires prior or concurrent completion of a residency program in general surgery.

61.2703 - Complex general surgical oncology fellowship programs
This instructional program class comprises any fellowship training program that prepares surgeons in the management of patients with difficult, rare or complex cancer presentations. These programs include instruction in clinical evaluation, surgical management, and adjuvant therapy. Requires prior completion of a residency program in general surgery.

61.2704 - Congenital cardiac surgery fellowship programs
This instructional program class comprises any fellowship training program that prepares physicians in the operative treatment of structural abnormalities involving the heart and major blood vessels, including defects resulting from congenital malformations as well as defects acquired in infants and children. These programs include instruction in the care of patients from the fetus to the adult. Requires prior completion of a residency or fellowship program in thoracic surgery.
