1 - Different-gender (cisgender) marriage or common-law union

This category includes persons who are living as part of a couple (married or common-law) in which members are cisgender and of different genders (one man and one woman).

Cisgender persons include those whose reported gender corresponds to their reported sex at birth.

2 - Same-gender (cisgender), transgender or non-binary marriage or common-law union

This category includes persons who are living as part of a couple (married or common-law) in which members are cisgender and of the same gender (two men or two women), or in which at least one member is transgender or non-binary.

Cisgender persons include those whose reported gender corresponds to their reported sex at birth.

Transgender persons include those whose reported sex at birth does not correspond to their reported gender. They include transgender men and women. Non-binary persons are excluded.

Non-binary persons include those whose reported gender is not exclusively male or female.
