This broad category comprises middle management occupations in trades, transportation and equipment, as well as occupations such as technical trades and transportation officers and controllers; general trades; mail and message distribution, other transport equipment operators and related maintenance workers; and helpers and labourers and other transport drivers, operators and labourers.

74 - Mail and message distribution, other transport equipment operators and related maintenance workers

This major group comprises mail and message distribution, other transport equipment operators and related maintenance workers. These occupations come with Training, Education, Experience and Responsibility (TEER) identified as TEER 4. Occupations classified in TEER 4, as those included in this group with a 4 as the second digit of their code, typically require completion of secondary school; or several weeks of on-the-job training with some secondary school education; or experience in a related occupation from TEER 5, when applicable (TEER 5 includes occupations with a 5 as a second digit in their code).

74100 - Mail and parcel sorters and related occupations

Mail and parcel sorters and workers in related occupations process and sort mail and parcels in post offices, mail processing plants, warehouses and internal mail rooms. They are employed by Canada Post Corporation, courier and parcel express companies and establishments throughout the public and private sectors.

    This group performs some or all of the following duties:

    Mail sorters

    • Sort mail according to destination
    • Bundle, label, bag and route sorted mail to the proper delivery stream
    • Operate vehicles and material handling equipment in order to sort mail and load postal trucks
    • Search directories to find the correct address for redirected mail.

    Mailroom clerks

    • Receive, process, sort and distribute incoming and outgoing mail, faxes, messages and courier packages manually or electronically
    • Maintain address databases and produce personalized mailings
    • Print and photocopy material, stuff envelopes and affix address labels
    • Weigh outgoing mail, calculate and affix proper postage, and bundle by postal code
    • May operate and maintain print shop and mailing house equipment.

    • Completion of secondary school and some college office administration courses may be required.
    • On-the-job training is required.
    • Physical fitness may be required for some occupations in this unit group.

    • Progression to supervisory or facility management positions is possible with additional training or experience.
74101 - Letter carriers

Letter carriers sort and deliver mail, record delivery of registered mail and collect money for cash-on-delivery parcels. They are employed by Canada Post Corporation.

    • Leave notices indicating that items could not be delivered and the location where they can be picked up
    • Return undeliverable mail to postal station.
  • Employment requirements

    • Some secondary school education is required.
    • Two weeks to one month of training is provided by Canada Post Corporation.
    • Physical fitness is required for some occupations in this unit group.

    • Progression to supervisory positions is possible with additional training or experience.
74102 - Couriers and messengers

Couriers and messengers pick up and deliver letters, parcels, packages, messages and other items within and between establishments. They are employed by courier service companies and other establishments throughout the public and private sectors.

    • Collect payment for items delivered
    • Keep record of items received and delivered using delivery information acquisition devices.
  • Employment requirements

    • Secondary school education may be required.
    • Eligibility for bonding may be required.
    • Ability to navigate streets and follow directions is usually required.
    • Physical fitness is required for some occupations in this unit group.
  • Additional information

    • There is some mobility into other delivery occupations such as delivery drivers.
    • There may be mobility to clerical occupations within the company.
    • Progression to supervisory positions may be possible with experience.
