7 - Trades, transport and equipment operators and related occupations

This broad category comprises middle management occupations in trades, transportation and equipment, as well as occupations such as technical trades and transportation officers and controllers; general trades; mail and message distribution, other transport equipment operators and related maintenance workers; and helpers and labourers and other transport drivers, operators and labourers.

73 - General trades

This major group comprises general trades. These occupations come with Training, Education, Experience and Responsibility (TEER) identified as TEER 3. Occupations classified in TEER 3, as those included in this group with a 3 as the second digit of their code, typically require completion of a post-secondary education program of less than two years at community college, institute of technology or CÉGEP; or completion of an apprenticeship training program of less than two years; or more than six months of on-the-job training, training courses or specific work experience with some secondary school education; or the accumulation of several years of experience in a related occupation found in TEER 4, when applicable (TEER 4 includes occupations with a 4 as a second digit in their code).

732 - Building maintenance installers, servicers and repairers

This sub-major group comprises building maintenance installers, servicers and repairers, including residential and commercial installers and servicers; general building maintenance workers and building superintendents; pest controllers and fumigators; and other repairers and servicers.

7320 - Building maintenance installers, servicers and repairers

This minor group comprises building maintenance installers, servicers and repairers, including residential and commercial installers and servicers; general building maintenance workers and building superintendents; pest controllers and fumigators; and other repairers and servicers. They are employed by companies specializing in specific product installation and service; water filtration and distribution plants and waste treatment plants; gas distribution companies; pest control companies; and product specialty repair shops and service establishments; or they may be self-employed.

73200 - Residential and commercial installers and servicers

Residential and commercial installers and servicers install and service a wide variety of interior and exterior prefabricated products such as windows, doors, electrical appliances, water heaters, fences, play structures and septic and irrigation systems at residential, commercial or institutional properties. They are employed by companies specializing in specific product installation and service.

    • Install, repair and service exterior prefabricated products such as siding, shutters, awnings, fencing, decks, septic and irrigation systems, signs and play structures using hand and power tools.

    • Some secondary school education is usually required.
    • On-the-job training and several months of related installing, repairing or servicing experience are usually required.
    • A driver's licence may be required.

73201 - General building maintenance workers and building superintendents

General building maintenance workers perform tasks related to the general maintenance of buildings. They execute minor repair work, maintain equipment and installations and perform preventive inspection of systems relating to building mechanics. Building superintendents employed in large establishments are responsible for the operation of the establishment and may also supervise other workers. They are employed by office and apartment building management companies, condominium corporations, educational institutions, health care facilities, recreational and shopping facilities, religious, industrial and other establishments.

    • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment and make minor purchases as required
    • Respond to requests from residents for minor repairs
    • Perform daily inspections on the building systems
    • Provide general assistance to skilled trade persons such as mechanics, electricians, carpenters and plumbers
    • Coordinate the preparation of housing units prior to the arrival of new residents
    • Ensure that security and safety measures are in place in the establishment
    • May advertise vacancies, show apartments and offices to prospective tenants and collect rent
    • May process lease or rental applications, including completion of background and credit checks
    • May move heavy furniture, equipment and supplies
    • May supervise other workers.
  • Employment requirements

    • Secondary school education is usually required.
    • Previous maintenance experience may be required.
    • A journeyman/woman certificate in one or more of the trades or a building operator certificate may be required for building superintendents.

73202 - Pest controllers and fumigators

Pest controllers and fumigators inspect buildings and outside areas for pest infestation and spray chemical treatments to kill noxious and destructive insects, rodents and other pests or set cage traps to capture and remove animals. They are employed by pest control companies, or they may be self-employed.

    • Prepare and spray chemical mixture on infested areas using mechanical or electric sprayer to kill insects, rodents and other pests
    • Fumigate households
    • Place and set traps to capture and remove animals, such as skunks or raccoons
    • Install animal control barriers such as needle strips, netting and other devices to keep animals off property
    • Clean out areas that harbour pests using rakes, shovels, brooms or mops
    • Advise clients on how to prevent pest infestation.

    • Completion of secondary school is usually required.
    • Completion of courses in pest control or extermination or several months of on-the-job training are usually required.
    • Provincial pesticide applicator licence is required in all provinces.

Other repairers and servicers repair and service a wide variety of products, such as cameras, scales, musical instruments, coin machines, vending machines, sporting goods and other miscellaneous products and equipment. They are employed by product specialty repair shops and service establishments.
