611001.1 - Basic education and skills programs

Pre-primary, elementary and secondary programs and courses providing a formal basic education for children and adults; and other programs providing fundamental knowledge and skills needed by individuals to function productively in society. Includes early childhood education programs, literacy and numeracy programs, adult basic education programs, non-credit second language programs, and personal improvement programs.

611001.1.3 - Adult basic education programs

Programs and courses that focus on specific approved programs in basic education for adults, which may lead to high school completion. Includes adult high school programs, programs preparing students for high school equivalency tests (e.g. the General Educational Development (GED) test), adult secondary diploma programs, pre-college or pre-university academic upgrading programs, and special education programs.

611001.1.3.1 - Adult secondary school diploma programs

Programs and courses that provide a secondary education, as specified by the local jurisdiction, for adult learners outside the regular secondary school program. Includes special education programs and courses. Successful completion results in the award of a secondary school diploma.

611001.1.3.2 - High school equivalency certificate preparation programs

Programs or courses that prepare adults who did not complete secondary school, to take high school equivalency tests, such as the General Educational Development (GED) test. Successful completion results in the award of a high school equivalency certificate, which is usually recognized as equivalent of a secondary school diploma.

611001.1.3.3 - Pre-college or pre-university level academic upgrading programs

Programs and courses designed to upgrade a person's knowledge and skills, in order to meet admission requirements to a program at the college or university level.
