Classification of highest educational attainment

1 - Less than secondary school graduation (highest)

This category includes persons with no schooling and persons who received some schooling but did not obtain a secondary school diploma or equivalent. Persons who received education that could be counted towards a postsecondary certificate, diploma or degree are excluded from this category.

1.1 - Grade 8 or equivalent or lower (highest)

This category includes persons with no schooling or with schooling no higher than completion of grade 8. In Quebec this refers to completion of schooling no higher than Secondary II. Persons who received education that could be counted towards a postsecondary certificate, diploma or degree are excluded from this category.

1.1.1 - Kindergarten or never attended school, or equivalent (highest)

This category includes persons with no schooling or persons who completed kindergarten but did not complete any further education.

1.1.2 - Grades 1-4, or equivalent (highest)

This category includes persons who completed grades 1, 2, 3 or 4 but did not complete any further education.

1.1.3 - Grades 5-8, or equivalent (highest)

This category includes persons who completed grades 5, 6, 7 or 8 but did not complete any further education. In Quebec this includes persons who completed grades 5 or 6 or Secondary I or II but did not complete any further education.
