Purpose
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is an indicator of changes in consumer prices experienced by Canadians. It is obtained by comparing, over time, the cost of a fixed basket of goods and services purchased by consumers.

The Canadian Meal Allowances Survey is part of the Consumer Price Index program. It is conducted once each year.
The information from the Canadian Meal Allowances Survey is used to calculate meal allowances for federal government employees on travel status in Canada. The average prices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner are calculated based on the prices from a variety of restaurants throughout the country.
The meal allowances are published on the National Joint Council website at: www.njc-cnm.gc.ca, under "Rates & Allowances".
