Why do we conduct this survey?
The data collected in this survey are used to produce the For-hire Motor Carrier Freight Services Price Index (FHMCFSPI). This index measures the price movements of services provided by for-hire motor carriers. Businesses use this index to gain a better understanding of their industry and assess their performance. Statistics Canada uses this index to deflate current dollar values and derive real growth and productivity for this sector of the economy.
Your information may also be used by Statistics Canada for other statistical and research purposes.
You are legally required to complete this questionnaire according to the Statistics Act.
Purpose
The purpose of this survey is to collect and compile data to measure the monthly change in the movement of the price for for-hire motor carrier freight services. These prices are combined and chained to form a price index. The estimates are produced on a quarterly basis.

Statistics Canada is prohibited by law from releasing any information it collects which could identify any person, business, or organization, unless consent has been given by the respondent or as permitted by the Statistics Act. Statistics Canada will use the information from this survey for statistical purposes.

To enhance the data from this survey and to minimize the reporting burden, Statistics Canada may combine it with information from other surveys or from administrative sources.
Reporting instructions
For each service your business will be asked to provide a base price, at the 15th of each month, or the closest working day, for the haul described. Base price is the price before discounts, surcharges and taxes. You will also be asked to provide the amounts of discounts and surcharges (fuel and other) for each haul.
If your business can no longer provide a price or an estimate because a service is no longer available, for example your company no longer services this route or carries this type of freight, you will be asked to provide pricing for another service.
Completion of this survey will take approximately 15 minutes.
Do not press the Submit button until you have completed reporting for all services.
Important information
Please price the same haul each month even if it did not occur in that month. Estimates can be used for months the haul did not occur.
Only change a service if your business no longer offers it.
