Antibiotic medication use (AMU)

AMU is offered as a rapid response module from January to June 2018, and data is collected from all provinces. It collects information about the use of oral antibiotics that are prescribed in Canada. In this module, oral antibiotic prescriptions include those prescribed by physicians and pharmacists, and those received in a hospital for later use. It excludes antibiotics that are administered to patients while they are in the hospital.

Data collected by this module include: the number of prescriptions per respondent and the medical reason for the prescription; the place the prescription originated (e.g., physician's office, pharmacy, dentist); patient adherence to the prescribed antibiotic treatment; and ways of discarding leftover antibiotics.

The overuse of antibiotics, the use of non-prescribed antibiotics, or non-adherence to prescribed treatment (e.g., not completing all the medication) may be contributing to an increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The data from this module will be used to assess the different types of antibiotic-use behaviour.
