Purpose

The Monthly Retail Trade Survey collects data on sales, e-commerce sales, and the number of retail locations by province, territory, and selected census metropolitan areas from a sample of retailers.

Additional information

The survey provides information to measure the health and economic performance of the retail sector and the Canadian economy. More specifically, the information is used to measure alcoholic beverages sales to the final consumer and to key sectors.

Confidentiality

Completion of this questionnaire is a requirement under the Statistics Act. Statistics Canada is prohibited by law from publishing any statistics which would divulge information relating to any identifiable business without the previous written consent of the business. The data reported on this questionnaire will be treated in strict confidence, used exclusively for statistical purposes and published in aggregate form only.

Data-sharing agreements

To reduce respondent burden, Statistics Canada has entered into data-sharing agreements with provincial and territorial statistical agencies and other government organizations, which must keep the data confidential and use them only for statistical purposes.

A list of the organizations with which Statistics Canada has data-sharing agreements with will be sent to you on an occasional basis.

Statistics Canada advises you that there could be a risk of disclosure during the facsimile or other electronic transmission. However, upon receipt of your information, Statistics Canada will provide the level of protection afforded all information collected under the authority of the Statistics Act.

Sales, Commisssions and Other Receipts

Report total sales, commissions and other receipts (excluding sales taxes) and the number of trading locations for both retailing and wholesaling activities, by geographical area.

Supplementary Information:
Report the Sales to Final Consumers, Sales to licenses for Resale, Sales to Retail Establishments and All other sales and receipts for each province and territory. See other info below.

Total Sales, Commissions and Other Receipts (54):
Report sales of alcoholic beverages and other products, commissions and other receipts during the reporting period. Include both retailing and wholesaling activities. Report sales net of returns of bottles, cans and other containers. Include federal excise taxes and any special provincial taxes built into the selling price of the alcoholic beverages (e.g. liquor taxes, health taxes, social security taxes, environment taxes). Exclude the federal Goods and Services Tax (GST), Provincial Sales Taxes (PST), and the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST). Cell 54 should be the sum of cells 56, 57, 58 and 59.

Sales to Final Consumers(56)
Report sales of alcoholic beverages and other products to final consumers for consumption off the premises. Include total sales made by your corporate outlets and consignment sales, less commission paid, of any agency or other retail store. Report sales net of returns of bottles, cans and other containers. Exclude GST, PST, and HST.

Sales to Licensees for Resale (57)
Report sales to establishments licensed to sell alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises, such as hotels, taverns, casinos, restaurants and caterers. Report sales net of returns of bottles, cans and other containers. Exclude the GST, PST, and HST.

Sales to Retail Establishments (58)
Report sales to retail establishments, including agency stores which take legal title of the alcoholic beverages (i.e. the goods are not on consignment). Retail establishments are businesses which sell alcoholic beverages, alone or in combination with other products, to final consumers for consumption off the premises. These retail establishments include private alcoholic beverage stores,supermarkets, grocery stores, convenience stores, specialty food stores, etc. Exclude the GST, PST, and HST.

All Other Sales and Receipts (59)
Report sales (of alcoholic beverages and other products) and receipts to all other customers not elsewhere specified. Include sales to airlines, railways, and ship chandlers. Include also fees paid by licensees to provincial liquor authorities when they purchase alcoholic beverages. Exclude what licensed premises pay for their liquor permits. Report sales net of returns of bottles, cans and other containers Exclude GST, PST, and HST.

Number of Trading Locations (52)
Report the maximum number of corporate trading locations (e.g. stores and distribution centres) where the sale of alcoholic beverages for consumption off premises was conducted during the reporting period.
