Introduction

Purpose

The Monthly Survey of Large Retailers (LMR) provides a breakdown of national retail sales on the basis of commodities for a panel of about 80 large retail enterprises. Sales data for more than 100 commodities are available on a monthly basis.

This survey collects detailed information about retail commodity sales in Canada to produce estimates of the distribution of the sales of various commodities at the national level, for different types of retail outlets in Canada.

Additional information

This survey collects essential commodity data to supplement retail automotive statistics. The business community, trade associations, government and others use this information in aggregate form to assist in decision making, marketing efforts and to assess business conditions.

The Statistics Act protects the confidentiality of information collected by Statistics Canada.

Statistics Canada is prohibited by law from releasing any information it collects which could identify any person, business, or organization, unless consent has been given by the respondent or as permitted by the Statistics Act. The confidentiality provisions of the Statistics Act are not affected by either the Access to Information Act or any other legislation. Please report sales, commissions and other receipts for each commodity sold during the reporting period, either in dollars or as a percentage of Total Sales, Commissions & Other Receipts but not a combination of both. If reporting in dollars, omit cents. Exclude GST, HST, PST and TVQ.

When precise figures are not available, please provide your best estimates.

-Sales of all goods purchased for resale, net of returns and discounts (do not deduct the value of trade-ins)
-Commission revenue and fees earned from selling goods and services on account of others, such as selling lottery tickets, bus tickets,and phone cards (do not report the value of sales)
