Description

The production and value data are provided annually from each of the provincial ministries responsible for aquaculture. Producers must report their production and value as part of their provincial licensing agreements.

Generally, finfish production is reported as gutted head-on and the value is based on a farm-gate value. Shellfish is reported as whole, again with a farm-gate value.

Data sources and methodology

Target population

The target population for this survey is composed of establishments primarily engaged in farm-raising aquatic animals and plants classified under the North American Industry Classification System code 112510 - Aquaculture that operated for at least one day during the reference year.

Instrument design

This methodology does not apply.

Sampling

This survey is a census with a cross-sectional design.

Data are collected for all units of the target population, therefore no sampling is done.

Data sources

Responding to this survey is voluntary.

Data are extracted from administrative files.

The administrative data are collected from the provincial ministries responsible for aquaculture as producers report production and value as part of their licensing requirements. Provincial authorities collect data based on the production and value of fish produced through aquaculture. The request, from the Agriculture Division of Statistics Canada, is e-mailed. Follow-up is generally done by telephone. Most provinces return the requested information in their own format.

Error detection

The data collected refer to provincial totals and errors are detected by comparing the data to previous periods, as well as with industry analysis, biological factors and consultations with industry specialists.

Imputation

If a province has been unable to provide the data prior to the release date, then analysts may estimate for that province based on historical data and current trends established in other provinces. Revisions are made when the administrative data becomes available.

Quality evaluation

The quality of the data is deemed to be good because production and value is reported by the producers as part of their provincial licensing agreements. Also, analysis indicates that the data are consistent with related information.

Disclosure control

Statistics Canada is prohibited by law from releasing any information it collects which could identify any person, business, or organization, unless consent has been given by the respondent or as permitted by the Statistics Act. Various confidentiality rules are applied to all data that are released or published to prevent the publication or disclosure of any information deemed confidential. If necessary, data are suppressed to prevent direct or residual disclosure of identifiable data.

The data accuracy of this program is good as the closely scrutinized source data have licensing implications and because the response rate is normally 100%.
