Description
This survey was discontinued after the six-month period ended December 31, 2002.
The semi-annual data collected by this survey are the value of shipments and the destination of office furniture products.
Data collected from this survey are important for studying market trends in the manufacture and shipments of these products. The data are used by the business community, trade associations (including The Quebec Furniture Manufacturers Association and The Ontario Furniture Manufacturers Association), federal and provincial departments and international organizations and associations.

Collection period: The month following the reference period.

Data sources and methodology
Target population
Within the Annual Survey of Manufactures (Survey ID 2103) survey frame, the target population is all establishments manufacturing office furniture products.
Instrument design
The design was done in consultation with the survey's funding/collection partners, including The Quebec Furniture Manufacturers Association, The Ontario Furniture Manufacturers Association, other furniture manufacturers and Industry Canada in order to fulfill their needs. Every effort was made to ensure questions asked are relevant and can be answered by the manufacturers.
Sampling
This survey is a census with a cross-sectional design.
Data sources
Responding to this survey is mandatory.
Data are collected directly from survey respondents.
Data are collected through a mail-out / mail-back process, while providing respondents with the option of telephone or other electronic filing methods. Follow-up procedures are applied when a questionnaire has not been received after a pre-specified period of time; respondents are phoned or sent a fax to remind them to send their questionnaire. It is expected that data will be received, captured, edited and tabulated within a 31 working day period after the reference month.

Error detection
Data are examined for inconsistencies and errors using automated edits coupled with analytical review by subject matter analysts in the Division. Several checks are performed on the collected data, looking for internal consistency such as totals equaling the sums of the components, comparisons with previous month's and previous year's data and consistency with historical ratios.
Imputation
Data for non-response are imputed by applying the percentage change between the reference period of the previous year and its previous period, to the most recent period's data for the non-respondent (Example: If X=current period and there was no response, then, ((X-2)/(X-3)) * (X-1)=imputed data). An option exists for the subject matter analyst to manually override this imputation if they have pertinent knowledge to apply a better imputation. Imputed data is revised in the following periods when the non-response situation is resolved.
Quality evaluation
Survey results are analyzed for comparability with observed industry trends and general economic conditions using surveys such as the Monthly Survey of Manufacturing (Survey ID 2101).
Disclosure control
Statistics Canada is prohibited by law from releasing any information it collects which could identify any person, business, or organization, unless consent has been given by the respondent or as permitted by the Statistics Act. Various confidentiality rules are applied to all data that are released or published to prevent the publication or disclosure of any information deemed confidential. If necessary, data are suppressed to prevent direct or residual disclosure of identifiable data.
Confidentiality analysis includes the detection of possible direct disclosure, which occurs when the value in a tabulation cell is composed of a few respondents or when the cell is dominated by a few companies.
Data accuracy
While it is intended for this survey to be a census, there is known under-coverage. Estimates are not made for the portion of the universe not surveyed.
Based on the 1999 Annual Survey of Manufactures, this survey accounts for 90% of the total shipments of specified office furniture products and the degree of estimation for non-response was 11.7%.
