Description

The survey provides estimates of the energy consumption of the energy-intensive manufacturing industries in Canada. It is funded by Natural Resources Canada and Environment Canada. The information from this quarterly survey complements the information collected from a sample of less energy-intensive industries in the Annual Industrial Consumption of Energy Survey (record number 5047).

Federal (Natural Resources Canada, Environment Canada) and provincial agencies are provided with data on a regular basis, as are several forest products associations.

Data sources and methodology

Target population

The target population is all major energy consuming industries (pulp and paper, iron and steel, smelting and refining, cement plants, oil refineries, chemicals, and mining), all large utility steam plants, establishments using 1,000 Mg or more of coal per year, and all other manufacturing establishments that are large consumers of energy within each province or territory.

The survey frame is developed from the Annual Survey of Manufactures (Survey ID 2103) for manufacturing industries, the Census of Mines, Quarries and Sand Pits (Natural Resources Canada) for the mining industries, and the Electric Power Generating Stations survey (Survey ID 2193) for the electric utility conventional steam generating stations.

Sampling

This survey is a census with a cross-sectional design.
