Description

This quarterly survey collects data on the activities of Canadian natural gas distributors. Data collected cover sales (in volume) to final customers, in manufacturing, mining, construction, services industries, commercial services as well as the residential sector.

This data are required for integration into the input-output sector of the Canadian System of National Accounts. Data are intended for use by survey respondents, federal departments and agencies, provincial ministries and authorities, industry associations, industry analysts, the press and the general public to assess trends in the natural gas distribution sector of the Canadian economy.

Collection period: End of reference period to 30 days after the reference period

Data sources and methodology

Target population

The target population is comprised of all establishments in Canada engaged in natural gas distribution classified to NAICS 221210 under the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS 2012). The observed population are those establishments in the target population for which business information is available on Statistics Canada's Business Register.

Sampling

This is a sample survey with a cross-sectional design.

Sample size is determined by sales. Companies surveyed account for 90% of the natural gas sales.

Error detection

Revisions may be performed for any quarter during the current reference year.

Estimation

Estimation procedures vary with product and season.

Quality evaluation

Although a sample survey, the actual figures are reported.

Disclosure control

Statistics Canada is prohibited by law from releasing any information it collects that could identify any person, business, or organization, unless consent has been given by the respondent or as permitted by the Statistics Act. Various confidentiality rules are applied to all data that are released or published to prevent the publication or disclosure of any information deemed confidential. If necessary, data are suppressed to prevent direct or residual disclosure of identifiable data.

In order to prevent any data disclosure, confidentiality analysis is done using the Statistics Canada Generalized Disclosure Control System (G-Confid). G-Confid is used for primary suppression (direct disclosure) as well as for secondary suppression (residual disclosure). Direct disclosure occurs when the value in a tabulation cell is composed of or dominated by few enterprises while residual disclosure occurs when confidential information can be derived indirectly by piecing together information from different sources or data series.
