Data sources and methodology

Sampling

This survey is a census with a cross-sectional design.

Data sources

Responding to this survey is mandatory.

Data are collected directly from survey respondents.

Questionnaires are mailed to all cold storage warehouses, and mailed back. Telephone follow-up procedures ensure a high rate of return during data collection.

Estimation

Final estimates are set at the sum of all edited responses and estimates of any outstanding firms, based on their previous two months information.

Quality evaluation

As this is a small census style survey with rigorous follow-up as required, data quality is deemed to be very high. In the case of a late report, telephone follow-up results in a high response rate. If the data cannot be obtained, estimates are made, and the data are revised the following month. Final estimates are usually within 2% of preliminary figures.

The survey results are evaluated through comparisons to previous estimates and other sources when available. Biological factors and industry limitations are used as a guide when evaluating the data or comparing to other data sets.

Disclosure control

Statistics Canada is prohibited by law from releasing any information it collects which could identify any person, business, or organization, unless consent has been given by the respondent or as permitted by the Statistics Act. Various confidentiality rules are applied to all data that are released or published to prevent the publication or disclosure of any information deemed confidential. If necessary, data are suppressed to prevent direct or residual disclosure of identifiable data.
