The purpose of these supply and disposition tables is to integrate information from various surveys and administrative sources to monitor the movement of grains and oilseeds across Canada.

Description

These supply and disposition tables integrate data collected from Statistic Canada's field crop reporting surveys and other grain marketing surveys to produce two types of supply and disposition tables: Farm (provincial level) and National (includes trade and commercial use). The data collection process also integrates administrative data from both external and internal sources such as provincial administrative data from the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC), Grain Farmers of Ontario and grain deliveries from Fédération des producteur des cultures commercials du Québec and the International Accounts and Trade Division (IATD) within Statistics Canada.

The main data releases contain supply and disposition tables at both the National and provincial levels showing the movement of grains across Canada at March 31st, July 31st , August 31st (corn and soybeans) and December 31st , according to the crop year. These supply and disposition tables serve as an information hub used by the provincial and federal governments in decision making for their programs for farmers, major grain producers in the industry and other analysts in the public and private sectors. Further, the supply and disposition tables are also used to track grain movement for both export and domestic usage in Canada.

Reference period: August 1st - December 31st; August 1st - March 31st, and August 1st - July 31st (Exception: August 31st for corn and soybeans)

Data sources and methodology

Target population

The conceptual universe of the survey consists of all stakeholders within the grain sector in Canada. The actual population studied consists of summation of all farms production, deliveries and stocks at the provincial level and at the National level which include the trade sector, commercial stocks and domestic disappearance Canada wide.

There is no primary data collection for the supply and disposition tables, the following surveys and administrative data are used:

Quality evaluation

Current year administrative data are collected, verified and published. As part of the confirmation process and in order to ensure estimates are up-to-date, accurate and reliable, previous year's data are compared and reviewed as required.

Once the data are all integrated from the various survey and administrative sources, the supply and disposition tables are balanced with the various variables.

Disclosure control

Statistics Canada is prohibited by law from releasing any information it collects that could identify any person, business, or organization, unless consent has been given by the respondent or as permitted by the Statistics Act. Various confidentiality rules are applied to all data that are released or published to prevent the publication or disclosure of any information deemed confidential. If necessary, data are suppressed to prevent direct or residual disclosure of identifiable data.

In order to prevent any data disclosure, confidentiality analysis is done using the Statistics Canada Generalized Disclosure Control System (G-Confid). G-Confid is used for primary suppression (direct disclosure) as well as for secondary suppression (residual disclosure). Direct disclosure occurs when the value in a tabulation cell is composed of or dominated by few enterprises while residual disclosure occurs when confidential information can be derived indirectly by piecing together information from different sources or data series.

Revisions and seasonal adjustment

Data are revised and updated for incorrect reporting when revisions are received from the various survey and administrative data sources used during the crop year.

Data accuracy

Every effort is made to ensure that administrative data are conceptually correct for the use to which they are put. Users should be aware that administrative data are generally compiled for an organization's own needs, and not for survey purposes. Any anomalies or inconsistencies detected are verified with the source, and where necessary, adjustments are made to reconcile data with the conceptual framework of our releases. The administrative agencies used are considered to be the best source available, and data received from them is judged to be of very good quality, even in those cases where adjustments have been made.

Since the supply and disposition tables use data from other processed survey and administrative data sources, the resulting derived data are less subject to processing and human errors.
